WELCOME TO MOTIVATE ME WEEK!
Your Day One Tip: FIND WHAT YOU LOVE THAT KEEPS YOU MOVING
I don’t care what recent Time magazine entitled Why Exercise Won’t Make You Thin says (although it is worth the read). You gotta move to get off the weight. The truth is that your best bet to losing weight is combining healthy eating with a regular fitness routine.
I started like everyone else by dabbling in every form of exercise I could: walking on the treadmill, trying out the elliptical, and quickly deciding that I STRONGLY DISLIKE stair steppers. While I was succesful early on in slowly losing weight, I didn’t really make leaping strides in my weight loss until I found cardio kickboxing. And I haven’t looked back.
The cardio kickboxing class that I attend is a 60 minute sweat fest: you’re punching, kicking, bobbing, weaving, and jumping all over the place. I’m a bit obsessed about going to class regularly. When class got bumped back a half an hour on Thursdays, my world was over for about a week. Or at least until Saturday AM rolled around again.
I know going to class makes me incredibly happy as I know I am doing something so fantastic for my body. Plus, in attending a group exercise class regularly, you develop friendships with some great people when you become a regular. Your new found friends help to keep you on track!
Of course, I had to find the healthy balance of workout routines as you can’t depend on one workout to see results. Today, I’m alternating between:
- kickboxing days: class with a bit of cardio before & after for warm up & cool down
- elliptical days: intense session on the elliptical rounded out with some strength training
- yoga/pilates days: about 60 to 90 minutes at home using my two favorite workout DVDs
How about today you take a chance and try something new. Scared that you’ll sweat to death in a “hot” yoga class? It’s probably a fast way to lose some water weight! Boot camp sounds too threatening? Well suck it up and get in the fight! You never know until you try it. Even if you find out that you don’t like it, variety is the spice of life and a workout routine.
